Nowruz 1399 a Celebration of Persian New Year featuring Mohammad Nejad

  • International School of Monterey Auditorium 1720 Yosemite Street Seaside (map)

Master composer and instrumentalist, Mohammad Nejad, a native of Iran and founder of the Nejad World Music Center in San Jose, will be performing alongside an ensemble of young, talented artists sharing instruments such as the Zarb, Tar, Violin and the Santur. Our very own Paricher Payandehjoo, co-owner of DeJa Vu Couture in Carmel, will be singing as a special, guest artist. In addition to the music concert, different Iranian families  will be exhibiting the traditional Haftseen, an altar adorned with distinct items symbolizing renewal, reflecting Iranian beliefs and values. Traditional Persian tea and homemade sweets will also be offered alongside a very unique children's book depicting the experience of an Iranian-American boy, as he prepares for and celebrates Nowruz!

Honoring the rebirth of nature, the Persian New Year known as Nowruz which translates into “new day”, is celebrated at the exact moment of the Spring equinox. In spite of its Iranian and Zoroastrian origins, Nowruz has been observed by diverse communities for over 3000 years, dating as far back as 555BC. It is a pre-Islamic celebration, well-sustained in the Islamic society after 650 AD, and continues to be honored as the most significant commemoration in Iran. Nowruz festivities last 13 days during the month of March and has been formally recognized (2010) as an international holiday by the United Nations
