Bilingual chorus - Wed 2:30-4 pm (ages 7-14)
Palenke Arts Bilingual Youth Chorus is taught by Juan L. Sánchez and Malinda DeRouen. Our goal is to uplift our singers and community with unique, inspiring, and reflective songs. Singers learn songs in Spanish and English, while learning the different elements a singer needs to focus in order to sing their best and feel their best.
The class also concentrates on the songs, exploring the lyrics and meaning, and empowering the singers to make each song their own. The song genres range from soulful jazz and youthful pop to Mexican folk and American standards. Every song we sing has roots in the honesty of life, whether it is uplifting and inspiring, or thoughtful and reflective.
Malinda DeRouen is a singer, actor, and musician with a background in jazz, soul, musical theater, folk, and choral. DeRouen is a vocalist with The Monterey Symphony, was a cast member of the long-running music review Beach Blanket Babylon in San Francisco, and has toured with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and El Teatro Campesino. She has performed locally with The Western Stage, Pacific Repertory Theater, New Canon Theater Company and is a member of the indie rock band Smoke Chaser. DeRouen loves sharing her passion and joy for singing and harmony with her students.
