The Latin Jazz Combo Workshop offered by Paul Contos is a comprehensive focus and interactive online engagement for high school musicians. In 75 min. per session, this program consists of teaching the basics and intermediate levels of jazz technique and improvisation skills, elements of the musical “language” that encompass and involve all global cultures, with an emphasis on the Latin-Jazz model and Afro-Cuban tradition. Class sessions contain: demonstration of skills, historical looks (live streamed video/audio) at repertoire for student examination and analysis by Mr. Contos, interactive playing using ‘Call and Response’ motifs in person, and preparation of materials for student collaboration and culminating performance.
Goals and Outcomes, and Considerations:
a) students learn musical traditions and how artistic expression informs the culture,
b) students are endowed with musical skills for advancement,
c) keeping in mind that social awareness combined with self-awareness and self-management skills enhance
d) empower music students to excel, along with achieving healthier emotional and social learning.
