Please join us for a very special concert to benefit and honor José Hernández, a beloved musician, church choir director, community leader, and father of three, who for 30 years has given his talent and service to thousands throughout the Monterey Peninsula. José is battling a very aggressive stage 4 lymphoma and needs our help. All proceeds from this concert will go towards his medical and personal expenses.
The concert will feature the Juan L. Sánchez Ensemble, led by Spanish modern-day troubadour Juan L. Sánchez, and an all-star cast of musicians that includes: Monterey Jazz Festival's own Paul Contos on flute and sax, Steve Uccello on bass, Mike Shannon on drums, David Sánchez on piano, John Nava on percussion, and Noe Hinojosa on vocals. Other guest performers will include award-winning singer-songwriter Keith Greeninger, Father Ommar Solis from St. Joseph's in Spreckels and José's daughter and violinist Karla Hernández.
The JLS Ensemble was founded in 1997 and toured the United States and Canada for years, bringing their Andalusian-flavored repertoire of socially-conscious world music to audiences of all ages. More recently, the ensemble performed at the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Mpnterey Jazz Festival.
Michael's Grill & Taqueria will be selling food that day and donating all the proceeds to José and his family.
Palenke Arts and San Carlos Cathedral are the event sponsors. All community members are encouraged to give generously to support our dear brother in this time of need. A suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for children will be collected at the door, but any and all donations are welcome!
A Gofund me campaign will be set up by the family on a future date.
